Most people use fabric softener and fabric rinse as if they were the same product with different names. They're not. They work through completely different chemistry, produce different results, and are suited to different types of laundry. Using the wrong one — especially fabric softener on the wrong items — can actively damage your clothes over time.

How Fabric Softener Works — It Adds to Your Clothes

Fabric softener works by depositing a thin coating of lubricating chemicals — typically cationic surfactants — onto fabric fibers during the rinse cycle. This coating makes fibers slide more smoothly against each other, which is what creates that soft, fluffy feel. It also neutralizes the static charge that builds up on synthetic fabrics in the dryer, reducing cling.

The key word is adds. Fabric softener leaves a residue on your clothes by design. That residue is what creates the softness — but it also has real consequences depending on what you are washing.

⚠️ When NOT to Use Fabric Softener The coating fabric softener deposits reduces the ability of fibers to absorb and move moisture. For anything designed to interact with water — towels, washcloths, bath mats, athletic wear, moisture-wicking sportswear, microfiber cloths, and cloth diapers — fabric softener actively works against their purpose. Regular softener use on towels makes them progressively less absorbent. On performance fabrics, it clogs the micro-pores that enable moisture wicking. Do not use fabric softener on these items.

How Fabric Rinse Works — It Removes From Your Clothes

Fabric rinse operates through the opposite principle. Laundry detergent is alkaline. During a wash cycle it bonds to fabric fibers to lift dirt and stains — but even after rinsing, some alkaline detergent residue remains in the fabric. This residue is what causes clothes to feel stiff, look dull, and hold onto odors even after washing.

Fabric rinse is mildly acidic. When added to the rinse cycle, it neutralizes this alkaline detergent residue, breaking the chemical bond between the detergent and the fiber so it can be fully flushed away. The result is fabric that feels softer not because anything has been added, but because what was making it stiff has been completely removed. It is the fabric feeling exactly the way it is supposed to feel — naturally.
